Ariadne is a character of Greek mythology who is at times portrayed as a goddess and at times portrayed as a mortal. She is associated with labyrinths, as it was she who provided Theseus with the string that led him out of the maze, and enabled him to defeat the Minotaur. In Ariadne Reclining, the Minotaur enjoys the human experience of an indulgent bath. Her deep pleasure in the act elevates a functional cleansing to an intimate ritual of raw sensuality.
The Minotaur Series expresses the concept of balancing energies. This half-animal half-human character is a counterpoint to the conquering aggressor of Greek mythology. While the creature of myth has the body of a man and the head of a bull, this minotaur has the body of a woman and the head of the more elegant, and wilder, wildebeest. In different stages of her life cycle, and in various acts of intimacy, she symbolizes innocence, promise, mystery, nature, beauty, raw power, defiance, and decay. She is at once both utterly wild and utterly human. She has been marginalized and pushed into the corners. Her humanity, her vulnerability, and her power are a challenge to the dominant yang culture of linear reductionist independence. She stands at the dawning of a new age.
