Nomandla is a Zulu name meaning ‘Mother of Power’. This character embodies strength and births it, in herself as well as the viewer. Her horns represent the shadow side of her power. They take the form of an Nguni cow, an heirloom breed of cattle indigenous to Southern Africa. They are resilient, strong, and fiercely protective. They are renowned for their beautiful hides, which are as varied as the landscape they grace. Nomandla holds the gaze of the fierce mother in us all.
The Face Masks series references the neatly composed masks we present to the world. Yet despite our efforts, the reality of who we are is never quite fully disguised. The darkness inside us peers out, dappling the light into a delicate and profound pattern.
